Rick took a deep dive into the product science and innovation behind ZO's latest additions to the ZO Anti-Aging Portfolio.

In the webinar, Rick Wooden introduced us to a new concept in skin health that has emerged called ‘Inflammaging’.
 
Inflammaging and the challenge of Premature Ageing
Rick says “The emergence of new science surrounding skin inflammation is new and is a significant component in the onset of premature ageing.” He explains that “Inflammaging is a low grade, asymptomatic, chronic inflammation which occurs due to physiological ageing and or exposure to external aggressors” The onset of chronic inflammation exhausts skin’s defensive and regenerative capacity resulting in damage known as Inflammaging”.

Ageing caused by inflammation, either intrinsic or extrinsic, is different to natural ageing or chronological ageing, the latter being caused by the depletion of collagen, elastin and hyaluronan, leading to the thinning of the skin, fine lines and wrinkles, dryness and loss of elasticity and tone. Premature ageing is different still, as this type of ageing is slow and progressive, silent and asymptomatic, and we cannot see it happening. Inflammaging, however, is ageing associated with the inflammatory responses.

Daily exposure to sunlight, pollutants and environmental aggressors, blue light, oxidative stress from external and internal stimuli induces an inflammatory cascade that deplete skin’s resources. Daily oxidative stress from internal and external aggressors, accumulate over time, inducing skin damaging inflammation that begins to exhaust the skin’s ability to renew itself. “This drives the premature ageing process”.
