Croma is celebrating its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of scientific expertise and innovation.
Founded in 1976 by pharmacists Karin and Gerhard Prinz, Croma-Pharma began with a simple ambition: to bring innovative pharmaceutical products to Austria and make new therapies more accessible to patients. What began as a small family business with just one salesperson, one bookkeeper and Gerhard Prinz as its first employee, laid the foundations for five decades of expertise in ophthalmology, orthopaedics and aesthetics.

FROM FAMILY PHARMACY TO GLOBAL AESTHETICS COMPANY
Croma’s early years were characterised by the development of expertise in ophthalmology. During the 1980s and 1990s, the company expanded its portfolio through licensing treatments for glaucoma, introducing intraocular lenses and manufacturing viscoelastic products for cataract surgery, while establishing itself as a trusted partner in the field. In the millenium, Croma expanded internationally, developing its own ophthalmic products and
entering the orthopaedics market with hyaluronic acid solutions for osteoarthritis.
Recognising the growing potential of minimally invasive aesthetics early on, Croma entered the field in 2009 with the launch of dermal fillers, extending its expertise in hyaluronic acid into aesthetic medicine. A pivotal moment came in 2014 when the company made the strategic decision to focus entirely on minimally invasive aesthetics, while continuing to manufacture hyaluronic acid syringes for medical applications. Today, Croma offers a comprehensive portfolio across all major treatment categories in minimally invasive aesthetics, including hyaluronic acid fillers and skin boosters, botulinum toxin, polynucleotide injectables, PDO threads, skincare and regenerative medicine solutions.
SHAPING THE FUTURE
For Croma, the anniversary is not simply a celebration of the past, but a point from which to look towards the future. Nearly fifty years after its founding, Croma remains proudly family-owned and has grown to more than 400 employees worldwide, serving customers in more than 80 countries through its subsidiaries and distribution partners.
Defining moments in the company’s history came in 2025 with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approvals of its first saypha® hyaluronic acid fillers and, in 2026, Croma surpassed 130 million syringes produced, further strengthening its position as one of the leading manufacturers of hyaluronic acid products.
Building on its heritage in ophthalmology and orthopaedics, Croma continues to evolve. Its return to the orthopaedics market in 2026 reflects both its longstanding medical expertise and its ambition to expand beyond aesthetics while remaining true to its scientific roots.
Croma continues to combine Austrian precision with entrepreneurial thinking and scientific excellence to create long-term value for healthcare professionals, patients and partners while continuing to shape the future.

For further details, please contact Wigmore.“When Karin and I founded Croma nearly fifty years ago, we could never have imagined where this journey would lead. Looking back today, I feel, above all, a deep sense of gratitude for every colleague, every partner and every person who has contributed to making Croma what it is today. What began with a small team has grown into an international company, but the values on which we built it have remained unchanged.”
