Finding your aesthetic family

Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Founder of The Sanctum Clinic, Kara Huggins, describes her journey in aesthetics

What is your professional story?
My background is paediatric nursing. I graduated in 2009 from the University of Hull and secured a job in paediatric outpatients where I learnt additional skills such as phlebotomy, IV therapy, chemotherapy and management of central lines. I moved into community nursing from there and cared for children with cancer, complex needs and life-limiting illnesses. I became the senior manager of the Hull and East Riding community nursing service, and my final role in the NHS was Head of Children’s Nursing in South Yorkshire. I trained in aesthetics initially in 2014.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your practice
I’m 34 years old and a mum of five children. I initially started my clinic with nothing else but my love of beauty, my medical background and my family’s support. Slowly but surely, my team and I have been able to grow—opening our stunning medical aesthetic clinic in August 2021, The Sanctum. It is situated in a quiet town in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

What is your 'signature treatment' and why?
I wouldn’t say I have a signature treatment, as I don’t believe anyone can create a 'signature way of injecting', but my favourite treatment to carry out, and the one I feel most passionate about, is the liquid nose job.

What are your tips and tricks when injecting this area?
Stay safe! Know your anatomy and never be complacent.

When did you discover VIVACY for the first time and for how long have you been using the VIVACY products in your clinic?
Just before the pandemic hit, I discovered VIVACY. I had been researching lip techniques and a paper in a journal I read quoted the VIVACY lips range. I was curious and contacted the company. I was FaceTimed by Victoria—who is now not only my dedicated VIVACY product specialist but also a really good friend of mine too. I’ve been using VIVACY now for over two years.

What is your favourite product and why?
STYLAGE XXL is my absolute winner! It is so versatile and, in my opinion, can be used safely across most areas of the face to give projection, build scaffolding and enhance structure.

Why did you choose VIVACY products for your clinic/to treat particular face area?
After working with some of the UK’s main dermal filler manufacturers, and researching VIVACY and STYLAGE further, I loved the 'family orientated' vibe VIVACY oozes as a company. The attention to detail and their commitment to education for me is priceless. It means I am always whole-heartedly supported as a clinician in all I do and that in turn keeps my patients safe.

What do you think is the stand out point of STYLAGE products on the current market?
The stand out point for the products is the syringe design and IPN-like technology, making injecting comfortable. For VIVACY as a company, it is their commitment to practitioners and patients alike.

How many male patients do you have in your clinic? Do you see an increase demand from male patients?
Since we relocated and rebranded our clinic to The Sanctum, we have had an increase in the number of male patients that visit us. Male patients account for approximately 25% of our patients’ base.

What percentage of patients in your clinic are coming back to get the procedure done again?
We have a really great patient retention rate. With 92% of our patients returning for further treatments.
