When I first started in aesthetics, I wanted to offer a range of skincare that would set me apart as a doctor, so I chose Obagi. I loved the results but tended to only use it for severe pigmentation. When Dr Obagi then created ZO Skin Health, it was a natural progression for me. I found the ZO range so much more extensive, thanks to its plethora of treatment protocols for every skin type and concern. I had great confidence in Dr Obagi from my previous experience, and having been out to Beverley Hills to train directly with him and see the training and manufacturing facilities, I know that these products are offering the very best that science can deliver.
Who does the range best suit and why?
There is a protocol of products for every concern, meaning the range suits anyone and everyone. I treat patients with a range of skin tones and conditions, from black skin with hyperpigmentation to teenage acne.
What is your signature approach when it comes to treating patients with ZO?
I am quite conventional by nature, so I usually follow protocols and guidance. I will always start with the Fundamental Five and tweak from there. The Fundamental Five consists of the five morning skincare steps that are needed for healthy skin. Cleansing, exfoliating, oil control, antioxidants, and sun protection. While at night, cleansing, oil control, and a regenerative cream are my go-tos. I would usually review at six to 12 weeks to tweak the regimen as needed according to skin type and the condition of the skin.
Which are your must-have products and why?
My shelves are stocked with everything from the range because everything is a must-have in my opinion. My favourite product is Smart Tone. I love the fact that my patients can get 12-hour slow release factor 50 SPF protection to stop premature ageing in its tracks. Plus, I love how it helps even out skin tone and impart a healthy glow. I’m also a big fan of the Growth Factor Serum. It hydrates like I’ve never seen before and makes such a difference to the skin that I struggle to get my clients off this and onto retinol, so usually end up persuading them to do both.
Do you use ZO Skin Health personally? Which products are your favourites?
I have been using ZO Skin Health for five years and my patients are always commenting on how good my skin looks. It’s a great advertisement. I follow the Fundamental Five principle but will vary my retinols and occasionally swap in the Growth Factor Serum in place of retinol if my skin is a bit dry. I always use an eye cream and regularly alternate between the three within the range to keep my skin guessing what’s coming next. I also alternate my cleansers; I tend to need the exfoliating cleanser for occasional breakouts, but I do like to use the hydrating cleanser if my skin has become dry from retinol use. I love the Recovery Crème, for my neck and the Body Emulsion, for the dry skin on my legs—it works so well that I now only need to cream my legs once a fortnight.
How does ZO complement the aesthetics treatments you offer?
ZO is the ultimate complement to all aesthetic treatments. There is no point restructuring the face with botulinum toxins and fillers, if the skin covering it is unhealthy and damaged. It also compliments our body treatment, and we give all our Coolsculpting clients cellulite cream with their treatments.
What do you most enjoy about working in aesthetics?
I love being a doctor and building relationships with patients. Aesthetics is particularly rewarding because you help create such a positive effect in people’s lives, and over time a great deal of trust is built.
It also complements my artistic nature. I particularly love performing both Coolsculpting and body contouring treatments. And I’m a big fan of administering fillers to help restore definition and volume that has been lost over time, to leave my patients looking like themselves at their best.
What’s your signature style?
I take a multifaceted approach to aesthetic treatments. I like to explain how we age on multiple levels and no one treatment can deal with it all. I find it most rewarding when clients can afford to do everything; ZO skincare for the surface, toxins for the wrinkles, fillers for volume loss, Profhilo for hydration and Ultherapy for lifting and tightening the muscles.
What new industry trends are you most excited about?
Body contouring is hugely popular at the moment, which is why I am most excited about my new Emsculpt Neo machine. Coolsculpting is not always suitable for all my patients, so it is great to have additional tools to fill in the gaps. I think this tech has so much potential and so many benefits— not just in terms of body contouring but in terms of improved health. For example, I treated my thighs before I went skiing and I was amazed not only by the increased strength I had to ski, but also the quicker recovery time post along day on the slopes.
How does working with Wigmore complement your business and why?
Wigmore meets nearly all my aesthetic needs. It makes my life so much easier to have access to a one-stop-shop.
What are the future plans for you and Hampton Clinic?
The highlight of our year was winning ‘Best Clinic—Midlands and Wales’, at the Aesthetics Awards, and my future plans are currently to ‘consolidate’. We have gone through an enormous amount of change in the last 12 months, including opening a second branch in February this year, taking on new staff and buying new machines including the Emsculpt Neo and a second Hydrafacial machine. We are working on settling in and strengthening and upskilling our whole team to maximise provision of treatments. We have also taken on a new SEO company, and teamed up with photographer, to strengthen our brand presence. These are very exciting times for us, and it’s onwards and upwards from here!
