Wigmore News meets Dr Lauren Jamieson

Rebecca Barnes speaks to Dr Jamieson about must-have products, upcoming trends and her ultimate industry icon

What is your favourite aesthetic treatment to perform?
I love helping people on their aesthetic journey towards feeling happy in their own skin. Combining advanced injectable treatments such as toxin and dermal fillers to soften the changes that often make people feel less good about themselves is a pleasure and a privilege. The subtle effect of well-placed filler never fails to astonish me, even after all the years I have spent in aesthetic medicine.

What is your signature approach when it comes to treating your patients?
A sensitive and compassionate understanding of what concerns the patient in front of me, combined with my clinical expertise to inform on what treatments might be beneficial. From there, I work in partnership with my patient to agree an effective and holistic plan. No patient is defined by the one thing that annoys them in the mirror—they are a whole face and a whole person, and therefore incredibly important.

Why do you use ZO Skin Health products?
ZO Skin Health is a truly remarkable range of products with one outstanding feature that sets it apart—it works. It’s highly effective for a vast spectrum of patients regardless of age, concern, skin problem, ethnicity or gender. I have been using ZO in my clinical practice for nearly seven years and love the results I can offer my patients – as do they! There is always another level we can take skin to through customisation and a clinical approach, and ZO Skin Health products are the tools I use to achieve this. On a personal note, having used ZO myself for all this time, I believe my skin is healthier and more youthful in my 40s than it was in my 30s!

Who does the range best suit?

The beauty of ZO Skin Health is that it affords us tools to customise skincare and help patients achieve optimal skin health no matter how old they are, where they are from or what their skin concerns are. The range covers the spectrum, from the need for really good daily skincare to preventing problems arising, rejuvenation, anti-ageing and beyond-for example, patients with medical problems such as acne.

Which are your must-have products?
Personally, I would be lost without Acne Control, Brightalive Skin Brightener and Wrinkle + Texture Repair. I have oily, acne-prone skin with melasma and sun damage from being brought up in the Mediterranean-ZO Skin Health has helped me achieve the best skin of my life in spite of these issues. For my patients, understanding the importance of Getting Skin Ready (GSR) to optimise results is key: appropriate cleansing, exfoliation and toning/oil control daily is a complete game changer for skin.

How does ZO complement the aesthetics treatments you offer?
Skin health is frankly fundamental to outcomes in aesthetic medicine, yet can sometimes be an afterthought. Truly holistic aesthetic treatment means that changes in every layer of the face are addressed, including skin-what we do at home every day is key for skin health. Furthermore, stimulated, resilient, functional skin heals faster and is synergistic with other treatment modalities which directly address skin. With ZO Skin Health we can actively improve skin function, both in barrier function and collagen and elastin formation; this complements everything else we do.

What do you enjoy most about working in aesthetics?
I believe we have a choice in how we age. Increasingly we are living longer, healthier lives, but as such we don’t always look on the outside the way we feel on the inside. When we don’t see some approximation of our mental image of ourselves in the mirror, it can be psychologically distressing. Aesthetic medicine gives us an opportunity for healthy ageing physically, mentally and emotionally.

What do you think are the industry trends to watch?
Pharmacogenetics—customising treatment based on the patient’s individual genetic makeup—is going to be huge. It’s incredibly exciting and is going to apply to aesthetic medicine in a very relevant and impactful way, from how we construct injectable treatments to how we prescribe skincare for specific conditions like acne. That is so cool!

What are the future plans for you and your practice?
I am beyond grateful to have developed my aesthetics career alongside working as an NHS GP in Scotland for more than a decade. Now I am largely moving beyond the NHS into advancing my aesthetic practice to constitute the whole of my clinical work, building an autonomous list in the Southside of Glasgow, as well as working in Harley Street several days each month. I’m deeply excited about the progression of aesthetic medicine as a new medical specialty, and am grateful to be at the forefront.

How does working with Wigmore complement your business?
As an active participant in the newest of medical specialities, I believe we have a responsibility to set standards and we do so in partnership with our industry colleagues. Wigmore offers not only provision of the best in aesthetics products but believes in supporting aligned practitioners with training and education from leaders in their fields. hat’s exceptional and is in line with my own values of continually striving to raise the bar in what we do.

How did you enjoy presenting with Dr Zein Obagi at FACE 2022?
It was epic—a huge privilege in my professional life which resulted in a deep sense of knowing I was doing the best I could in my clinical practice. I can’t hide how much of a fan I am of Dr Obagi! I first met him in 2016 and was frankly blown away, not only by his charisma but his application of skin science. I took all he said back into clinic and applied the principles he taught. The clinical results speak for themselves, and my passion for ZO Skin Health speaks for itself—the fact that a few years later, as a result of that teaching I was right there with him, speaks volumes. On behalf of my patients and myself, thank you Dr Obagi.
