EYELASH ENHANCEMENT-A CLINICAL APPROACH

XXtralash reveals the results of their latest clinical trial evaluating improvement in lenght, thickness and curl

With the trend to have eyelashes longer, thicker and with extra curl, the eyelash market is growing on average by 6% per annum and is on average 15% of the total cosmetic purchases per annum. It is clear, that this market is one are that could be potentially very profitable for aesthetic clinics.
There are many treatments available for eyelash enhancement in pharmacy and drug stores. Some of these are of little value, can be expensive and none have clinical evidence. Therefore, by providing customers with a clinically proven alternative it can drive current customers to ask for professional advice and potentially drive new customers to clinics seeking professional advice and reliable treatments for their eyelashes.
Prostaglandin
There has been a major shift in the treatment of eyelashes when it was discovered that prostaglandin and prostaglandin analogues (such as misoprostol) actually increased the length of eyelashes. This was discovered when prostaglandin analogues were undergoing clinical trials for glaucoma and one of the side effects was increased lash length. The resulted in products being marketed which contained prostaglandins or prostaglandin analogues to increase eyelash length, regardless of the potential side effects.
Eyelashes grow and then fall out naturally over an eight to 12 week cycle. Therefore, the eyelashes need constant treatment with eyelash enhancers to keep the look that the customers are aiming for. This has caused some issues with the long-term use of eyelash enhancers. Prostaglandin based products are now only available on prescription due to the potential side effects, such as eye pruritus, conjunctival hyperaemia, skin hyperpigmentation, ocular irritation, dry eye symptoms and erythema of the eyelid.
Several prostaglandin analogues are available for treatment, but long-term use of these has been questioned due to lack of clinical data and some side effects including pigmentation of the iris and darkening of the skin around the eye1.
New treatments are now focused on delivering the efficacy needed to enhance the eyelashes with the potential for long term use without the potential side effects associated with some of the prostaglandin analogue based treatments.
XXtralash and growth factors
XXtralash has recently undergone an extensive clinical trial, using advanced digital techniques to measure the improvement in lash length, thickness and curl.
XXtralash is part of the SkinGenuity range of growth factor based treatments that uses advanced, focused and targeted growth factors which are nano-encapsultated to grow the eyelashes.
XXtralash works in three main ways
1. Specific and targeted growth factors are applied to the rim of the eye using the XXtralash pen. These stimulate the eyelashes to start the growth cycle and improve the length and thickness of the eyelashes
2. The body naturally inhibits the length of eyelashes. XXtralash contains an oil that has been found to stop this inhibition allowing the eyelashes to continue growing.
3. XXtralash provides nourishment to the eyelashes as they grow so that they do not become brittle and break as they grow.
Clinical study
In the clinical study, it was found that 83% of patients saw a good or very good improvement in eyelash growth. Of that, the majority saw an improvement in the length and thickness of the eyelashes.
Eyelash growth was measured using advanced digital technology which quantified the improvement in eyelash length.
A visual comparison showed an improvement in lash volume over the period of the trial. This was done by comparing total volume before and after the treatment.
Lash thickness was measured and again showed a significant improvement from baseline. Lash curl was measured and this was again seen to improve over the period of the trial.
Conclusion
XXtralash is the only growth factor based product for eyelash enhancement. It has been clinically proven to work on all areas of the eyelash enhancement and can be used as long-term treatment.
