From acne to clarity

Lucy Chalkley continues our series of skincare revelations from the Wigmore team

As a child, I always felt quite grateful for my skin as I’ve never had any big issues with it. Unlike a lot of my friends growing up, my skin has been fairly clear, other than the odd few spots, so I was never really concerned about it or expected to deal with it. However, everything changed once I hit puberty…

When I was 13, puberty hit me hard with horrific periods and a bad case of hormonal acne. I suddenly felt a huge drop in my confidence as I had developed acne around my cheeks, lower face and jaw, which was something I had never experienced and didn’t know what to do. So, I did what any teenager would do and went to my local pharmacy in a panic. Without doing any research on products that I actually needed, I grabbed as many products as possible, thinking any cleanser, exfoliator and a moisturiser would do the trick and clear my spotty face. Of course, none of these worked and I was left spotty and broke from spending all my birthday and pocket money.

After a year of countless breakdowns (which only made my skin worse), my mum decided to take me to the doctors to see if they could do anything, as nothing seemed to help. I was prescribed the Pill. This definitely helped my hormonal acne, and I started feeling a lot better in myself as my skin was becoming clearer again. Then, unfortunately, Covid hit and we were required to wear masks everywhere. As a girl with somewhat oily skin, wearing a mask all day in school was not good for my skin and I developed a mild case of acne again.

I felt my confidence drop once again and was feeling insecure about the way I looked. This time, I did a bit of research before hitting up my local pharmacy, thoughtfully choosing a few products that I thought would help but nothing seemed to work.

After a few years of trying different products, I gave up. I noticed that my skin would only get worse whenever I used a range of different products, so I stopped using skincare. I would only use a moisturiser and spot cream when it was needed, and this seemed to work. However, what I didn’t realise was that skincare wasn’t just about fixing what’s happening on the surface of the skin, it’s also about what’s happening underneath and protecting your skin’s long-term health (which I know now since working at Wigmore).

When I was given the opportunity to have a VISIA Scan at Wigmore Pharmacy, I was intrigued to see what it would say about my skin as I was not doing a lot with it. I was told that I have sensitive skin and a combination of dry and oily skin (which I didn’t even realise could happen).

I was given a mixture of products and felt excited to try a skincare routine that was designed to specifically help my skin. When I was in the depths of my hormonal acne, I had no idea which products would actually help, so having my skin analysed and being told exactly what my skin type was, along with the products best suited to it, made all the difference for me. So here are my thoughts on the products I was recommended…

1. The IMAGE Skincare ORMEDIC Balancing Facial Cleanser leaves my skin feeling fresh and clean without stripping any moisture from it, nice and prepped for the rest of my routine.

2. Then, I follow with the HydroPeptide Clarifying Toner Pads and I won’t lie, the first few times I used these, it made my face a little red. However, after trusting the process, I realised these are a staple for me. They’re easy to use, leaves my skin feeling refreshed, and help keep my skin smoother and clearer.

3 & 4. Afterwards, I use the IMAGE Skincare Vital C Hydrating Anti-Aging Serum and the Vital C Hydrating Water Burst. These leave my skin feeling hydrated and moisturised, and they smell incredible, which is a plus!

5. To finish, I apply the IMAGE Skincare Vital C Hydrating Eye Recovery Gel. I absolutely love this, as someone who suffers with dark circles under their eyes, this worked miracles for me. I’ve noticed it makes my eyes look brighter and like I’ve had a full night’s sleep (even if I haven’t!).

To conclude, the results have been truly impressive. I’ve noticed huge improvements in my skin feeling smoother, hydrated and refreshed, as well as looking clearer with less spots.

Looking back, I’ve realised that good skincare isn’t about finding a miracle product. It’s about understanding what works best for your skin because everyone’s skin is different, and what works for someone else, might not work for you!
